Dessert Overlooking Detroit

After a little more than an hour long drive, we arrived at IKEA at Jennifer’s request. This was followed by a nice dinner. Then we drove downtown in search of something adventurous or at least memorable to do with the rest of the night. Fortunately, we found both.

While looking up at the Detroit skyline, I noticed one of the tallest cylinder-shaped buildings (formerly the Renaissance Center) had a ring of light around one of the top floors. This intrigued me. I thought back to some of our first dates in Indianapolis where we would go get dessert on the top floor of the Hyatt. There is an elegant place called the Eagle’s Nest where Jennifer and I once saw the first snow of the year from.
I became as giddy as our 7 month old baby at the thought that our journey might lead us up 70+ floors to one of the highest points in Detroit for a similar experience.

Once in the lobby, we snapped some pictures and noticed that there were two other restaurants on the first and second floor that could be our fall back plan if getting to the top didn’t pan out. I tried to check out the menu at the restaurant on the 2nd floor, but two bouncers made it clear that I wasn’t allowed to enter due to a private party. Someone leaving the restaurant mentioned that Mary J. Blige, LL Cool J, and other well known celebrities would be or were there for a new magazine release party. I thought about mentioning to the bouncers that I was once an extra in National Treasure 2, but then I realized that no one really cares about that other than my family and friends - ha!!

A reluctant employee pointed us toward the elevator that could take us up to the Coach Insignia. I’m not sure if he hesitated because of our casual dress or because of the baby stroller. Probably both. Either way, we forged ahead.

We took a few minutes to deliberate when we noticed that most of the people getting onto the elevator were dressed much nicer than us. The discussion went mostly like this…. “Please Jen… this will be cool... c’mon... I know we have a stroller... and a baby... and we’re underdressed... but please... please...” Who says begging can't work on occasion? I got the ok and we hopped into the glass elevator.

After being seated, we asked for a dessert menu, and shared this monstrous cheesecake (below). With two free waters and a tip, the $10 bill fit nicely into our budget. It felt like quite a value as I signed the debit card receipt and looked out on the million dollar view.

Looking out across the water, there was a great view of Canada. If we would have had our passports on us, the dialogue would have gone like this... ‘Hey, Jen... what time is it?’ Her response without hesitation, “Brandon, don’t even think about it.” Next time, right?
View Of Canada From DetroitWell, even without a quick trip to Canada, I think this trip should make it onto my list of “10 Amazing Dates” (on the left sidebar). Click on some of the links on that list if you're interested in getting some more ideas on what to do on a date... and in some cases, what not to do...
